Worst Amazon purchase ever, a real piece of junk. First, the treadmill was delivered by a semi 18 wheeler. It couldn’t get close to my home. I had to back my pickup to the back of the semi and help the driver load it. Then we backed up to my door and unloaded it there from my pickup.

Next, they packed the plastic console under the treadmill and several console supports were broken.

Lastly, the treadmill would not fold properly after assembly. The deck would hit the right handgrip, it was off-center by 2″. Using my level, I found that the support arms were not square with the treadmill. I had to remove the console and handgrips, stand on the treadmill and force the arms over to the proper position. I then reassembled the handgrips and console. After that, it would fold normally.

If it wasn’t so much trouble, I would send it back. Instead, I’ll try to sell it to someone I hate.

Running Outside, Manual, or Electric Treadmills: How To Choose

Comments Off

If you want to improve your workout by spending more time running, then you’re already on the right track and understand the positive effects of exercise. But how do you decide the best running environment for yourself? Do you run outdoors, on a street, track, or running trail/bike path? Do you run indoors with a manual treadmill? Or do you buy an electric treadmill for your workout at home?

There are many choices for how you want to get fit. When it really comes down to it, the most important factor of all is personal preference. If you really prefer one of these options over the others, then that is what you should do, of course! But if you’re having trouble deciding, here’s an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Running Outside

This is, of course, the most affordable form of working out, and it certainly has its advantages. The outdoors provides fresh air and often picturesque scenery. But in cold, wet, or windy weather it can be nearly impossible to run (or build up the will power to even go outside.) Also, running outdoors forces you to keep your own momentum going. It’s easy to allow yourself to slow down or walk, which gives running outdoors a huge disadvantage as compared to the consistency of an electric treadmill.

Manual Treadmill Running

Manual treadmills bring your workout indoors. This means you can run in all weather, and can even watch TV while you do. You can also run for shorter periods, whenever you have time, rather than having to devote yourself to outdoor distance. (On a treadmill, you’re always nearby!) But manual treadmills use your own muscle and momentum to keep the track running, making them a big challenge to runners. They are good for walking, but for running you may want to find an electric version.

Electric Treadmill Running

That’s why electric treadmills were invented. They keep the belt running at a consistent speed, and you’re always challenged to keep up with them. This allows you to run faster, longer, and farther, and focus your energy on the run, not the belt. An electric treadmill also features easy shifting height/incline, and many can measure your heart rate and keep track of the calories you have burned on your run. The downside is that they cost a bit more, but if you know what you’re looking for, you can wait until you find a good deal on it; the investment is, for most regular runners, well worth it.

The Benefits Of An Electric Treadmill Vs. Manual

If you want to run regularly, but find it difficult to maintain motivation (or even just tolerate bad weather!) when running outside, then purchasing a treadmill for your home is definitely the way to go. When it comes to choosing the treadmill that is right for you, there are a number of factors to consider. From price to size to style to functions, there are treadmill on today’s market to fit everyone’s needs.

But the biggest decision you will need to make is whether you want a manual or electric treadmill. There are some things that these have in common, but much more that they do not. In terms of shared aspects, both manual and electric models of treadmill provide a track or tread on which you run, which rotates under you so you ‘run’ or ‘walk’ without actually going anywhere. Instead of you moving, the ground moves. This is why they are so nice to have in the home.

But that is where the similarities end. A manual treadmill is powered manually, by you. This means that the force of you moving your feet against the tread is what causes it to rotate. You essentially push it with each step you take. Depending on how tight it is, this can be easier or harder to do. But something all manual treadmills have in common is that at least a portion of the energy you use during your run or walk is used not to move you, but to move the tread.

This is what makes electric treadmills so popular with many at-home runners, joggers, and walkers. With an electric version, the treadmill comes with a small or medium sized motor, which powers the tread around the track beneath you. You will set it at a certain speed, and it will move, whether or not you are on it. It is then your job to keep up.

In this way, an electric treadmill allows you to use all of your energy on your run. This means you will likely stay on the treadmill longer and go ‘farther’ in a single workout, as the energy is not drained from you to keep the machine going.

Electric treadmills also come with all sorts of other great functions: from inclines to heart rate monitors, the key from there is just picking out the model that gives you what you’re looking for at a price that you are comfortable with.

Considering Getting An Electric Treadmill? Here’s What To Look For

There are dozens and dozens (if not hundreds) of electric treadmills available for purchase on the market today. From huge, feature-rich models with loads of functions and capabilities (such as Proform treadmills), to simple, track-only styles, there really is something for everyone. So how do you decide what you need, and what you don’t? Since a treadmill can cost quite a bit, you want to make sure you’re paying for the quality and features that really do suit your needs, without paying for more of a machine than you need, or paying more than the machine is actually worth.

Here are a few pointers in picking out an electric treadmill to run on in your home:

  1. Try it out first. Regardless of price, features, name brand, size, or style, there’s no point in getting an electric treadmill that you don’t like: that’s the surest way to waste your money. So try anything before you buy it to make sure you’re going to take full advantage of your machine once you get it home.
  2. Research features. Look into the different features that are available, and have an idea of what you want (and what you don’t) before you go into the store (whether that’s a physical or virtual store is, of course, up to you). Say you know you want a heart rate monitor, a calorie counter, and a few different pre-set workout ‘courses’; make sure you get those. But don’t pay for something that measures much more than you’ll ever want. That’s not a good use of your money!
  3. Quality counts. Of course, if you’re going to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars, you want to know you’re getting something that will last. While a smaller motor may be more visually appealing, generally a larger, solid motor is both more capable and more enduring. Look for something that has a reputation for a long life-span. And you know that with electric treadmills that come with long warrantees, the company builds them well enough to have faith in them for years to come. That’s a good sign.

Using An Electric Treadmill To Improve Your Aerobic Workout

The great many functions that come on a high-end (or even moderately price) electric treadmill give you many, many options for pursuing a well-rounded home workout. Most people buy a treadmill for their house for one of two reasons. Either they are already a runner outdoors but want a way to better measure their workout, provide variety to the course without going across town, or want to be able to run in adverse weather conditions/seasons. Or, the second reason people buy a treadmill for the house is that they do not work out regularly, and hope the treadmill will inspire them to do so.

Each of these types of runners will probably gravitate toward different uses of the electric treadmill, at least at first. For the novice runner, who is trying to get back into shape, the treadmill gives you a great way of keeping track of your exercise. By challenging yourself to at least stay consistent, and then to go a littler faster, or a little longer, or a little farther, you ease yourself into working out in a manner that is much less intimidating than heading outside for a run.

For more experienced runners, the electric treadmill gives features that can help you better challenge yourself, and better track your progress in a more precise and fine-tuned way than simply running outdoors. While a GPS running watch can keep track of some things, the computer on a treadmill can measure much more at once. Plus, most electric treadmills come with pre-set running courses already laid out. Whether you want to do interval training, endurance training, or even target certain muscles, the sophisticated computer in the treadmill gives you an easy way of doing so, and of keeping track of your progress both within a single run and over time.

So whether you are a new runner or an experienced runner, the computer on your at-home treadmill gives you a way of monitoring where you are, and of pushing yourself to the next level with ease. From distance and speed to time and heart rate, and anything in between, the modern treadmill can do a lot more than the treadmills of the past, and that is to the health benefit of everyone, no matter where you are starting.

Integrating The Electric Treadmill Into Your Running Routine

Are you a regular (or semi-regular) runner who usually runs outdoors? If you’re considering buying an electric treadmill to use in your garage, basement, spare bedroom, or even family room area, here are some pointers you can consider to help you get the most out of your workout.

First of all, one of the most convenient things about a treadmill is that you can use it any time, for however long you like. While it’s true that if you plan to do some serious running, you will probably need to don some work out clothes, and you may need to shower afterward. These things take time. But the treadmill still saves time because you don’t need to go outside, down the block, or even across town to a track or running path. You can just hop on when you’re ready, and hop off when you’re out of time.

This means that transitioning from outdoor running to indoor running may present a change to your workout schedule. For example, do you usually run after work, but only on nights when you get home by a certain time? Consider getting up just 10 minutes earlier in the morning, doing a 10 minute jog on the treadmill before you start your day, and then 10 minutes less at night. You feel like you save time, but you still do the same amount of running, so jogging is less of an inconvenience on days when you get home later.

Consider multi-tasking. When you are busy with work, family, and any other number of commitments, an electric treadmill makes it easier to get something else done while you exercise. If you run intensely on the treadmill, of course, this will be harder to do, as you’ll need to focus on your breathing and footing.

But if you use your electric treadmill for a light jog or a brisk walk, you can do things like watch the news, get caught up with your most recent book or magazine, or even chat with your kids or spouse when you all get home from work or school. Be creative. The electric treadmill makes it easy to jog more and more frequently. So do what makes sense in your own life, and you’ll be more in shape without having to go out of your way to do so!
